Amid the Hemlocks by Everild-Wolfden Amid the Hemlocks by Everild-Wolfden
The leaves were long, the grass was green,
The hemlock-umbels tall and fair,
And in the glade a light was seen
Of stars in shadow shimmering.
Tinuviel was dancing there
To music of a pipe unseen,
And light of stars was in her hair,
And in her raiment glimmering.

I can't really claim credit for the overall look here - I was following a tutorial (from :iconfreaky665: ), but the other little additions are mine.

And I think I've finally found the style I like. Basically, instead of painting the whole darn thing (which I can't seem to do properly with humans - birds, no problem, as seen in my Autumn Peacock) I just paint in the highlights and reflected highlights - and it's that that gives the painted look. I didn't need to smooth the skin in this picture since it was so well lit, but in others, I'll probably have to.

Background is purchased from Renderosity (available through DA from :iconmoonchild-ljilja: , model from shutterstock (included in the purchase of the tutorial - I don't have the exact link, but it's photo number 11409778)

I'm 100% sure that she would look a lot more innocent than...well, THAT. -_-'

Well, judging by the fact that she was confused the first time Beren came because she had never experienced panic or fear before would point towards the fact that she's innocent...:pat:

I know the tutorial and almost even bought it but thought 20 bucks is too much to pay for a tut so I passes. But it's nice to see someone did and I have to say you managed to follow the steps pretty well!

Those little dots in her hair I don't get as they seem a bit misplaced when viewed large but that is just a detail. Nice work indeed otherwise.

Do you think the tut is worth the 20$?

Thank you!

It's a reasonable tutorial, and certainly has helped me in the one area I was struggling to find any tutorials in, but I think it's only worth it for the extra bits and pieces included with the tutorial - there's about 9 extra textures in there and some nice mist psd files. The tutorial itself is fairly comprehensive, but like I say - it helped me on one particular aspect (the painted look), but everything else can be found in tutorials around DA already. (NOT covered in the tutorial, but used in this image - creating the Elf ear and adding textures)

The dots in her hair I originally left out, but decided to put them back in after re-reading the poem on Luthien Tinuviel and coming across the line 'And light of stars was in her hair' - the dots were supposed to represent stars caught in her hair.

Thank you! Well, that was following a tutorial that you can't get any more, but I have since developed my own technique for producing the 'painted look' - and I've got the tutorial here: [link]

(And you can see examples of that technique here: [link] and here: [link]

Ok, thanks for the heads up! I was a bit interested in that tut but didn't find it worth the money. I will just find my own way...:)

I get the stars now that you give the backgound story to them but I still feel they good have been places better to my mind. Still only a detail...;)

Have a wonderful weekend!

Cheers,
Janne

No problem! Yeah, probably best... :D

I know what you mean - I maybe should have just dotted them about, rather than clustering them.... ahh well, never mind.

If you don't mind sharing so how do you do that glowing light outline on her left shoulder and some other highlights?

I don;t mind sharing at all! Essentially, it's painted in using a low opacity and soft brush. I did a walkthrough of another piece I did using the same technique here: [link]

Thanks! That is actually pretty much what I have used myself on the outlines to get them blend better. Nice to know it works on higlights as well...:)
